"In the heart of Belgium's hop country, Poperinge throws a party that comes around only once every three years. The Bier- en Hoppefeesten return on 18, 19 and 20 September 2026, transforming the Grote Markt and surrounding streets into a celebration of the plant that gives beer its bitterness and aroma.
This is more than a tasting event. Friday opens with a cheerful children's parade and an evening 'Munich Brewer's House' gathering with Poperinge's twin towns. Saturday fills the centre with brass bands from home and abroad, a spectacular Tattoo on the Paardenmarkt, and the crowning of the hop queen. The undisputed highlight comes Sunday afternoon with the Hoppestoet: more than 1,300 participants stage the global story of hops, from harvest traditions to hand-picking, before a Hommelpap party closes the weekend on the Grote Markt.
Local breweries and cafes pour regional beers throughout, and the whole town leans into the festivities. Because the event happens so rarely, hotels fill quickly; booking ahead and arriving by train from Poperinge station are sensible. Free to wander, deeply rooted in Flemish farming heritage, it is a rare window into living beer culture.
